Dr. Rick Eschholz of Hardwick Chiropractic recently attended a four-day seminar to further his knowledge and use of Bio-Geometric Integration (BGI). Created and developed by seminar leader Dr. Sue Brown, BGI was chosen as one of ten great chiropractic approaches in American Chiropractic magazine. BGI is a chiropractic approach that recognizes the innate geometry of the body and the self-referencing ability of the body/mind.

The seminar, BGI III, allowed participating chiropractors to explore the complex nature of the geometry and bio-dynamics of the body. BGI III delved deeply into the holographic nature of the body and investigated fractals on a macroscopic and microscopic scale. Dr. Eschholz said of the seminar, “I appreciate how the BGI approach continues to evolve. As a health care provider, I enjoy helping practice members reach their next level of health and ease. I’m excited to learn and apply these latest refinements in our office.”

The BGI approach understands the primary importance of the body’s soft tissue, including the joint tissue, tendons, ligaments, discs, the covering of the brain and nerves, and the fascial and connective tissue that gives muscles and organs their structure and support. Low-force chiropractic and osteopathic techniques address both acute symptoms and chronic issues because these connective tissues respond well to a gentle, low-force adjustment.

Dr. Grace Johnstone of Hardwick Chiropractic recently completed a four-day advanced training in cranial nerve manipulation. Led by Dr. Alain Crobier, osteopath and co-founder of the Barral Institute, the training focused on treating the cranial nerves, meningeal system (the protective covering of the brain), and brain.

The cranial nerves and spinal cord connect the brain to the rest of the body. They give us our sense of smell, taste, hearing, vision, and effect how our internal organs function. Many of life’s stressors, including trauma, chemical sensitivities, connective tissues adhesions, medications, and blows to the head can alter the function of the cranial nerves. People suffering from tinnitus, balance problems, asthma, Bell’s Palsy, and migraines may benefit from this work. Due to the direct relationship between the cranial nerves and the organs, problems such as acid reflux, esophageal spasm, gall bladder problems, and irritable bowel syndrome can also be helped.

According to Dr. Johnstone, “This work fits beautifully with the approach we use at our office, and it allows us to apply new techniques to help people recover from what can be very challenging conditions.”

In May, Dr. Grace Johnstone of Hardwick Chiropractic participated in a three day seminar focusing on peripheral nerve manipulation of the lower body. The neural manipulation curriculum is developed by French Osteopaths Jean-Pierre Barral and Alain Crobier, and presented by the Barral Institute, a health resource center that presents continuing education courses to healthcare professionals worldwide.

This seminar explored evaluation and treatment techniques to facilitate normal functioning of the peripheral nerves of the lower body. The course focused on the anatomy and function of the peripheral nerves in the lower body as well as typical pain patterns that arise from dysfunction of these peripheral nerves. Numerous methods for releasing restrictions along nerve pathways were identified and participants integrated these methods into treatment sessions.

According to Dr. Johnstone, “This work fits beautifully with what we do at our office, and it allows us to offer new techniques to help people recover from nerve related trauma and lower back and sacral injuries”. Neural manipulation is a manual therapy in which gentle, specifically directed pressures encourage normal mobility and tone of the nervous system and surrounding connective tissue. Releasing local nerve restrictions in the lower body often resolves more comprehensive dysfunctional patterns throughout the body, as well as addressing such issues as sciatica, hip and knee pain, vulvodynia, and Morton’s Neuralgia.

In January, Dr. Grace Johnstone, Dr. Rick Eschholz, and Dr. Teri Dodge will attend a seminar entitled Neuromeningeal Manipulation: An Integrative Approach to Trauma through The Barral Institute.

The seminar focuses on the impact of trauma and whiplash. Participants will learn the appropriate anatomy and physiology for treatment of whiplash and trauma conditions, understand how whiplash creates restriction patterns throughout the body, and identify techniques that encompass the whole body, not just the cervical spine. Finally, participants will discover new applications of visceral manipulation principles and techniques as they can be utilized for patients presenting whiplash and other conditions involving trauma.

The Barral Institute is an international organization providing continuing education and certification based on the innovative therapies developed by world-renowned French Osteopath and Physical Therapist Jean-Pierre Barral and French Osteopath Alain Croibier.
